Ok, by law you must wear a life jacket if you are in a boat, it is no different to wearing a set belt in your car.
As the Skipper of a boat you are responsible for every one wearing a life jacket so you either have to have enough on board or you make sure people have their own and that they wear them!
No one expects to end up in the water but a good life jacket will in most situations save you or your friends or your families lives.
So here's how you buy them,
Make sure they fit properly, You should be able to sit, walk and bend with out them getting in the way.
Make sure your weight is what the jacket is made for, most jackets have this on the inside some were.
Try and stick with jackets that have neck supports around the back of the neck area.
What ever you do when buying for kids, as we know they grow! buy the jacket to suit them "now" there is no point buying something for them grow into, it has to "fit" or it just won't work properly.
Hopefully you will never have to go through being in the water after an accident, just remember the cost of a life jacket is small compared to your life.
